Arsenal's top goals against United

arsenal fa cup

This Friday the two most successful FA Cup teams of all time go head to head in the fourth round. Since the formation of the Premier League Arsenal and Manchester United have been fierce rivals, fuelled by their tussles for success in the late 90s and early 00s. Sadly both sides have slumped down the table in recent seasons and the fixture has lost some of its importance.

However, the fixture has lost little lustre and is almost always guaranteed to be entertaining. In anticipation of Friday's match here are some of the best Arsenal goals against Manchester United:

David Platt, November 1997

Nigel Winterburn delivered an accurate corner into the middle of the box and David Platt arrived perfectly to loop a header into the top corner. David had spent most of the season on the bench but when called upon he came in and delivered the goods.

Mesut Özil, October 2015

Already 1-0 up at the Emirates, Mesut found Theo Walcott in the final third who drove into the box with the ball. With three players around him Theo Walcott showed great poise to cut the ball back to Özil who tucked the ball tidily into the bottom corner. 2-0 Arsenal.

Thierry Henry, October 2000

Yes, that goal! You know the one. Thierry Henry with his back to goal receives a pacey pass, flicks the ball up, turns on the spot with the grace of a ballerina and volleys the ball over the head of Fabien Barthez who could do nothing but stand in wonder at the exquitise skill of the King. Footballers often try stuff like this but you've better odds of calling 10 numbers in a row at the casino roulette table than hitting a ball that sweetly in the blink of an eye.

Paul Merson, March 1994

Lee Dixon chipped the ball from just past the halfway line into the Manchester United box. Paul Merson got to the ball, let it bounce thrice then smashed it off the post and into the goal on the half-volley. Sensational goal.

Thierry Henry, March 2004

Henry unfairly had a reputation for bottling the big matches yet his goal record against the big teams shows what utter nonsense this was. For Thierry's second goal on this list we've picked a rocket from 2004. Starting the move off by cushioning a header into the path of Reyes who held the ball up as United defenders has flooded back to block his path. Reyes cut the ball back to Henry who looked up and unleashed a furious strike that rippled into the top of the next from some 35 yards.

Dennis Bergkamp, November 1995

Irwin tried to take control of a ball that was lifted into his box but couldn't cope with the pressing from Dennis Bergkamp. The Iceman robbed the left-back of the ball and poked it under the United keeper.

Thierry Henry, January 2007

For Thierry's third goal on this list we've picked a rare header from 2007. Cult hero Emmanuel Eboue played a smart one-two with Tomas Rosicky on the right flank, got past Patrice Evra and floated a ball into the box. Thierry Henry got his head to the ball first and powered a header into the far corner. Such a good goal on so many levels.
