Wenger's 18 Best Matches #Wenger18
On October 1st 1996 Arsène Wenger was unveiled as the new Arsenal FC manager. Over the next 18 years he would lead the club to glorious highs and a few lows borne from the very high standards he himself set. There was joy, there was misery, there was elation and anger but all along the way there was Wenger. He has transformed our beloved club in more ways than one and has sacrificed himself for the good of Arsenal FC, ironically showing humility and lack of ego whilst doing so for a man so infamously characterised as stubborn and arrogant.
Thank you for all of the memories Arsène. Here is a break down of our favourite 18 Wenger matches.
18. Wenger's First NLD
Arsenal secured a comfortable 3-1 victory in Arsène's first North London Derby at Highbury. Wright (pen), Bergkamp and Adams made it on the scoresheet. Wenger has seen off 12 permanent Spurs managers in his time at Arsenal.
17. First Champions League game at Highbury
On 20th September 2000 Arsenal hosted Shakhtar Donetsk in a group stage game. This was Arsenal's first Champions League era game at Highbury having previously played at Wembley. Highbury had hosted Nantes the previous season in a 3-0 win in the UEFA Cup and saw a thrilling game against Deportivo La Coruna.
Arsenal won this game 3-2 with Keown the unlikely scorer of a brace.
16. Kanu believe it?
On 23 October 1999 Kanu scored a scintillating hattrick to win Arsenal the game 3-2.
