How Arsenal Can Boost Their Warchest With A Few Budget Squad Signings
The season isn't quite over yet but the rumour mill is turning strongly and the tabloids and football agents (real and twitter fakers) are lining up to tell us who Arsenal are going to spend their "warchest" on.
Arsenal certainly have money to spend this summer and the vociferous anti-Wenger crowd have wasted no time in letting everyone know exactly how much cash we have in the bank. The pro-Wenger crowd (and those inbetween) will have you know that this summer was always the one where the finances would come good and the manager could splurge. Either way it's not important, what is done is done and we have an FA Cup final to look forward to before we worry about squad additions for a league assault next season.
When the money became available, how much we have and how long for is pretty much irrelevant at this point unless you want to get stuck into a world of "what if's". What is important is the money is there and we have no excuses for not spending it. With the World Cup around the corner, Arsenal's pockets brimming with cash and hopefully an FA Cup win as a foundation to build on this should be an exciting summer for Gooners. When it comes to transfers if this season has taught us anything it is we have an incredible team when all are fit and a lack of depth or quality replacements is what has really cost us more than that elusive world class striker. Arsenal will need a few starting additions this summer but equally as important they will need a good handful of squad signings to complement the existing squad and temper the addition of youth players from the U21s stepping up with experience and ability.
Everyone is clamouring for lots of huge signings but we think, with the right squad players, Arsenal could get away with (for want of a better phrase) just two "marquee" signings. If Arsenal pick up the right talent from English clubs, and at a reasonable cost, then they could put a lot more of that warchest towards the big name players the team desperately needs to push on next season.
Taking current weaknesses into consideration and potential losses this summer through expired contracts Arsenal are probably in need of up to 9 players. Two GKs, one right-back, upto two centre-backs, one defensive midfielder, one winger and upto two strikers.
Bargain options aren't really the types of player people want to see us linked with but most sane people would appreciate that cost is not representative of value or worth. Flamini cost nothing in terms of transfer fees but has been worth a lot to the squad this season.
